Attribution for ChatGPT Ads and AI assistants
AI assistants are a new place to find apps, but the attribution underneath still runs on clicks, stores and SDKs.
In short: Revenue from a paid ChatGPT Ads click can be attributed like any other click-based channel: tag the click, match the install on first open, and tie later purchases to that install, provided your MMP supports the channel. Organic mentions in AI answers mostly cannot be attributed to the assistant, because there is often no click to carry, so those installs land in organic and need survey and test-based measurement instead.
What is AI assistant attribution?
AI assistant attribution is the practice of crediting app installs, in-app events and revenue to an ad or an answer shown inside an AI assistant such as ChatGPT. It follows the same rules as any other channel: a qualifying interaction, a window, and a match on first open.
The difference is that AI assistants send people to apps in two very different ways, and only one of them leaves a trail.
- Paid placements, such as ChatGPT Ads, where an advertiser pays for a click. The click can carry campaign parameters and a click ID.
- Organic answers, where the assistant names or recommends an app in its reply. There may be a link, or the person may simply open the app store and search.
Can you attribute revenue to ChatGPT?
For paid ChatGPT Ads, yes: a tagged click can be matched to the install and to every later revenue event from that user, as with any click-based network your MMP supports. For organic mentions in AI answers, usually not, because most of those installs reach the store with no click data at all.
So "how to attribute revenue to ChatGPT" is really two questions. Paid revenue is an integration task. Organic revenue is an estimation task.
How a paid click becomes attributed revenue
The chain is the one described in how an install gets attributed, with a few points specific to a new channel.
- The click is tagged. The ad's destination is a tracking link or smart link that records the click, the campaign and any click ID the ad platform passes.
- The person reaches the store. On Android, the click details can travel through Google Play in the Install Referrer, which Google says stays available for 90 days after install. On iOS there is no store referrer for a normal App Store install.
- The app opens for the first time. The MMP's SDK sends its signals and the MMP looks for a qualifying click inside the window.
- The install is credited. If the click is inside the window and no later click wins, the install belongs to the ChatGPT Ads campaign.
- Revenue follows the install. Purchases and subscriptions sent as in-app events, with amount and currency, are attached to that install, so ROAS for the campaign can be built by cohort.
- Results go back to the ad platform. Conversion events are reported back to the platform, through whatever pixel, server-side API or postback route it supports, so it can optimise towards buyers rather than taps.
What can and cannot be measured today
| Situation | Attributable to the assistant? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Paid ad click, Android, Play install | Yes, at user level | The Play Install Referrer can carry the click details |
| Paid ad click, iOS, tracking allowed | Usually, at user level | Matching can use the advertising identifier |
| Paid ad click, iOS, tracking not allowed | Only in aggregate, if the platform takes part in Apple's frameworks | User-level matching is not allowed without permission |
| Ad seen in a chat, no tap | Rarely | Only if the platform reports views and the MMP accepts them |
| Organic answer with a tracked link you control | Partly | Your own link can be tagged, but the assistant is not the click source |
| Organic answer, person searches the store | No | No click, so the install is organic |
The iOS rows follow from App Tracking Transparency and SKAN, covered in iOS attribution with ATT and SKAN. Apple's frameworks give a 30-day window from a StoreKit-rendered ad or attributable web ad to install, but only for ad networks that take part, so check whether any AI ad platform you buy supports them before counting on iOS data.
Why ChatGPT installs show up as organic
Even with a paid campaign live, ChatGPT installs often end up in organic. The common general practice causes:
- No MMP integration for the channel, so clicks are never recorded and there is nothing to match.
- Untracked destination. The ad points straight at the store or a website rather than a tracking link.
- Lost parameters. A redirect, short link or web page between the ad and the store drops the click data.
- Window too short. The person installed after the MMP's click window closed.
- Web-to-app break. The ad lands on a website, and the jump from site to app store is not tracked.
This troubleshooter for installs showing as organic walks through the same checks in order.
Measuring the part you cannot attribute
Organic AI answers will keep sending installs that no MMP can tie to the assistant. General practice for estimating them:
- Ask at onboarding. A short "where did you hear about us?" question with an AI assistant option gives a directional share.
- Watch the organic baseline. Compare organic installs and branded store searches before and after your app starts appearing in AI answers. Organic vs paid installs explains why organic is a residual and moves for many reasons.
- Tag every link you own. Pages that assistants tend to cite, such as your website and help pages, should use tracked links to the store, so at least that path is measured.
- Run holdout tests for paid. Pausing a paid AI campaign in one region or period and comparing installs shows how much of its credited volume was incremental.
Which MMPs support ChatGPT Ads?
Support for a new ad platform depends on each MMP building an integration, so check your vendor's current network list rather than assuming. Linkrunner describes itself as the first MMP to attribute mobile app installs from ChatGPT Ads, and its ChatGPT Ads attribution page sets out how the integration works. Support from other MMPs was not confirmed in this guide's research, so ask each vendor how clicks, events and revenue are passed for the channel.
Questions on this chapter
Can I attribute revenue to ChatGPT Ads?
Yes, if the ad's clicks are tracked and your MMP supports the channel. The install is matched to the click on first open, and purchases sent as in-app events are attached to that install, so campaign ROAS can be built by cohort.
Can I track installs from ChatGPT answers that are not ads?
Mostly not as a credited source. When a person reads an AI answer and then searches the app store, there is no click to match, so the install is organic. Onboarding surveys and baseline comparisons give a directional estimate instead.
Why do my ChatGPT Ads installs show as organic?
The usual causes are a missing MMP integration, ads that point straight at the store or a website, parameters lost in redirects, or installs that happen after the click window closes. Test with a tracked link on a real device before spending more.
Is ChatGPT Ads attribution different on iOS and Android?
Yes. On Android the Play Install Referrer can carry click details through the store, while on iOS user-level matching needs tracking permission. Without it, only aggregate data is possible, and only if the ad platform takes part in Apple's frameworks.
Which attribution window should I use for ChatGPT Ads?
Start with the same click window you use for other click-based networks, so results are comparable, and keep view-through short or off until the platform's view reporting is clear. Write the setting down, because a different window will change reported installs.
Do I need a separate tool to measure AI assistant traffic?
Not for paid campaigns, which run through the same MMP as other networks if it supports the channel. Organic AI influence needs survey and test-based methods on top, because no attribution tool can see a recommendation that produces no click.
